Gerard Sekoto Artwork
Gerard Sekoto holds a central place in our collection, with works that reflect his distinctive use of colour, expressive compositions and close observation of everyday life. His portrayals of people and communities in Sophiatown, District Six and Eastwood capture the poverty and racial oppression they faced, alongside their dignity and human connection.
Sekoto left South Africa in 1947 and settled permanently in Paris, seeking opportunities beyond the racial restrictions he faced at home. Understanding these experiences helps us appreciate why he painted as well as what he painted.
At The Gallery at Hayling, we invite you to explore selected works by this influential South African artist. Browse the available artwork online or visit our Hampshire gallery to appreciate the pieces in person, with private viewings available by appointment.
