Leonid Afremov was a Mexican–Israeli artist whose modern impressionist paintings combined a distinctive personal style with a colourful palette. He worked predominantly in oils using a palette knife, painting subjects that included landscapes, urban scenes, seascapes, flowers and portraits.
The internet played a central role in his career. Representing himself, Afremov promoted and sold his paintings online, with relatively few exhibitions and little reliance on galleries or dealers.
Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, he remained there until 1990. He subsequently lived in Israel and Florida before settling in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in 2010. There, he devoted time to teaching young artists through what became Afremov Studio, alongside his retirement.
Afremov died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in Playa del Carmen’s municipal cemetery.
