An oil on canvas by South African artist Gerard Sekoto, dating from circa 1950–1953. Sekoto began his professional career in 1938 and became one of South Africa’s most important modern artists. His paintings document the people and communities of places including Sophiatown, District Six and Eastwood. In 1940, the Johannesburg Art Gallery acquired a work by Sekoto, making him the first Black artist to have a painting purchased for a South African museum collection. He left South Africa for Paris in 1947 and remained in exile until his death in 1993.
