Working mainly with oils and a palette knife, Leonid Afremov developed a distinctive modern impressionist style. His colourful paintings explored landscapes, city scenes, seascapes, flowers and portraits, and were generally politically neutral.
The Mexican–Israeli artist took an independent approach to his career, representing himself and selling his work online. Exhibitions, dealers and galleries played only a limited role in how he shared his paintings.
Afremov was born in Vitebsk, Belarus, where he remained until 1990. He then spent twelve years in Israel before moving to Boca Raton, Florida, in 2002.
In 2010, he settled in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. There, he combined retirement with teaching young artists through what became Afremov Studio. His immediate family subsequently joined him. He died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in Playa del Carmen.
