A distinctive use of colour and palette knife work defined Leonid Afremov’s approach to modern impressionism. Working mainly in oils, the Mexican–Israeli artist painted landscapes, urban scenes, seascapes, flowers and portraits. His work was largely politically neutral.
Afremov built his career through self-representation, using the internet to promote and sell his paintings rather than relying extensively on exhibitions, dealers or galleries.
His life took him through several countries. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, he remained there until 1990, then lived in Israel until 2002. Eight years in Boca Raton, Florida, followed before he moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in 2010.
Playa del Carmen became his retirement home and a place to teach young artists through what developed into Afremov Studio. His close family later joined him there. He died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in the town’s municipal cemetery.
