Framed oil on canvas, signed by Leonid Afremov. Reference S1039.
Afremov’s painting practice spanned seascapes, landscapes, city scenes, flowers and portraits. Working mainly with a palette knife and oils, the Mexican–Israeli modern impressionist developed a distinctive style recognised for its colour. His work was generally politically neutral.
He maintained an independent career, selling and promoting his paintings online with little involvement from dealers or galleries and limited participation in exhibitions.
Originally from Vitebsk, Belarus, Afremov lived in Israel between 1990 and 2002 before spending eight years in Boca Raton, Florida. He moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in 2010, where he retired and taught young artists through what became Afremov Studio.
His immediate family followed him to Mexico. He died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in Playa del Carmen.
