Leonid Afremov developed a recognisable modern impressionist style, working predominantly with oils and a palette knife. Colour was central to his practice, which encompassed city scenes, landscapes, seascapes, floral subjects and portraits. Most of his paintings were considered politically neutral.
A self-representing artist, Afremov promoted and sold his work online, taking part in relatively few exhibitions and working only minimally with galleries and dealers.
Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, he moved to Israel in 1990, then to Boca Raton, Florida, in 2002. In 2010, he chose Playa del Carmen, Mexico, as a place to retire and teach young painters. This teaching work developed into Afremov Studio, and his immediate family later joined him in Mexico.
Afremov died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in Playa del Carmen’s municipal cemetery.
