Afremov established his own distinctive approach to modern impressionism, working mainly with a palette knife and oils. His colourful subjects ranged across landscapes, city scenes, seascapes, flowers and portraits, with most of his work considered politically neutral.
The Mexican–Israeli artist managed his career independently, promoting and selling his paintings online with limited participation in exhibitions or involvement from galleries and dealers.
Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, Afremov lived in Israel from 1990 to 2002, followed by Boca Raton, Florida, until 2010. He then moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to retire and teach young artists through what became Afremov Studio. His immediate family later joined him there.
He died on 19 August 2019 and is buried in Playa del Carmen’s municipal cemetery.
